1. Combination of Search Terms

Join the search categories given in the selection boxes of the Detailed Search with the logic operators AND, OR, AND NOT which themselves may be combined.
Usage of operators may have various consequences for the result list:

Operator	Description	Example	Result
AND	All data sets which contain both search terms (intersection of sets)	Title: "milk" AND Author: "Thomas"	All items are included in the result list which have the word "milk" as a or in the title and the author of which is named "Thomas".
OR	All data sets which contain either search term (set union)	Author: "Brecht" OR Year: "2001"	All items either written by an author named "Brecht" or published in the year 2001 are included in the result list.
AND NOT	All data sets which contain which do not contain the search term (exemption set). The operator AND NOT always must be combined with AND or OR except if used as the beginning of a search term:	Author: "Brecht" AND Title: "Dreigroschenoper" AND NOT PublisherVerlag: "Müller"	All editions of the Dreigroschenoper by author Brecht which were not published by Müller are included in the result list.

2. Truncation

Truncate your search terms to extend the search to all terms which

start with a particular word or part of a word: right truncation.
Example: Bundes*
end with a particular word or part of a word: left truncation.
Example: *otographie
start with a particular word or part of a word and end with another: inner truncation.
Example: Fotogra*ie

Mainly, it is used to provide for different spelling and variations of terms, e.g. singular and, or plural forms.

SISIS-InfoGuide uses the following wildcars:

Wildcard	Effect	Example
*	replaces a number of alphanumeric characters	input right truncated: Elekt* Result: Elektronik, Elektra, Elektrizität etc. input inner truncated: *Graik** Result: Grafik, Graphik input left truncated: oto Result: Photo, Foto, Toto*
?	replaces exactly one alphanumeric character	Input: standardi?ation Result: standardisation, standardization

3. Type of search

By selecting one of the following options it is possible to determine the type of your search.

exact words	By using option "exact words" it is possible to search exactly for the words as they have been entered.
similar words	By choosing the option "similar words" the search includes also related terms (e.g. plural forms, terms in a foreign language).
